-
- This is a, somewhat belated, summary of the response to my question
- about a month ago about extending the keyboard cable on my 512e. First,
- uxc.cso.uiuc.edu!dorner sent me an explanation of why the apple didnt
- use the regular cable.
- ----------------------------------------------------------
-
- Several companies advertised longer cables for the mac keyboards. I
- haven't looked recently, though. You might check the ads in the back of
- MacWorld.
-
- Me, I intend to buy a regular phone handset cord, and
- cut-strip-wrap-solder- tape away...
-
- The reason apple didn't use a regular handset cord is that the wires are
- not straight through. No problem if you have just a mac and a keyboard,
- but they used to sell a numeric keypad as well. Using flipped
- connectors would have required the user to hook up the cords to the
- numeric keypad in part- icular positions--too much to expect of apple's
- targeted market.
-
- Steve
- ---------------------------------------------------------
-
- Several people mentioned that BMUG has or had cables available
-
- One person observed that there was a company named Tacklind Design Inc
- that sold the cables. The cable business was sold, however, to
- Aesthetics Inc. 415-322-2257. My call was taken by someone who told me
- they were out right now but that he would call back when they were
- available (which he indicated would be within a few days.) I never
- heard from him again. They wanted $15 for them.
-
- Others suggested that I use a modular plug connector to hook the
- standard cable with the keyboard cable. This idea would work, but the
- modular connector is for the wrong plug, of course, and the connection
- is tenuous.
-
- What I wound up doing was buying on of those modular connector crimping
- tools and cutting the ends off two headset cords, replacing them with
- the modular connectors and connecting them with the inline coupler.
-
- Many thanks to those of you who answered my query.

- Under multifinder, I've had a few different programs bomb, claiming they
- needed more memory, when "About Finder" tells me there is more than
- enough memory in the largest unused block. e.g. trying to run the Tempo

- was over 500K, but the installer still bombed. What is going on and

- Recently people suggested unformatting a floppy by using a magnet. I
- needed to do so, so used a donut magnet about 1 inch in diameter (don't
- know the strength), and the floppys were readible just fine afterwards.
- While I'm gratified to know that they aren't THAT vulnerable, I'm
- wondering just how strong of a magnet is needed for this task. (This
- time I ended up formatting them on a PC to get the needed effect).

- beta draft I).
-
- >2. What is the Horizontal Scan rate? I may want to use my own monitor.

-
- Direct quote from the Spectrum manual: "If your non-SuperMac monitor has
- the same timing specs as the Spectrum monitor, you can plug directly
- into the video board." No mention of several scan rates. The spec
- sheet for the 19" Sony monitor that SuperMac sells includes the

- Deflection frequency - horizontal: 63.34/48.8 kHz
- - vertical: 59.98/60.0 Hz
-

- I suspect that this is a Moire-like interference pattern between the
- dots in the gray pattern and the spacing of the openings in the
- monitor's shadow mask. If you don't like it, try another desktop
- pattern.
-
- Mild flame: although I have been quite happy with a number of SuperMac
- products, and satisfied with their support, they have recently played a
- bit loose with their advertising and promotion. Maybe I am picking nits
- here, but there have been a couple of advertised features that failed to
- show up in the Spectrum card. In addition to the above examples, my
- board cannot handle 4-bit color, even though the lit says it can, and
- the promise of a cheap GenLock upgrade has been reconsidered. It will
- be an EXPENSIVE upgrade, since the desgners found out there was more
- involved in the implementation that they initially realized. There is a
- free ROM upgrade on the way which is alleged to cure the 4-bit color
- problem, and maybe some of the other discrepancies between product and
- specs. It sounds like the urge to outspec the competition induced them
- to release the card before all the advertised features had been

- Here is a small Lightspeed Pascal program which demonstrates the
- problems I am having getting MultiFinder to recognize that I have
- changed the contents of the clipboard:
- --
- program testClipboard;
- var
- thePicture : PicHandle;
- bounds : Rect;
- pictureSize : Size;
- result : longint;
-
- begin
- SetRect(bounds, 0, 0, 100, 100);
- ClipRect(bounds);
- thePicture := OpenPicture(bounds);
- MoveTo(0, 0);
- LineTo(100, 100);
- ClosePicture;
- HLock(Handle(thePicture));
- pictureSize := GetHandleSize(Handle(thePicture));
- result := ZeroScrap;
- if result = NoErr then
- begin
- result := PutScrap(pictureSize, 'PICT', Ptr(thePicture^));
- if result = NoErr then
- result := LoadScrap;
- end;
- HUnlock(Handle(thePicture));
- KillPicture(thePicture);
- end.
-
- This is probably the simplest program possible which puts anything into the
- clipboard, but it does not work with MultiFinder. It DOES work will all other
- systems that I tried it on, including System 4.2 running without the
- MultiFinder. Tracing through the program under MultiFinder with LSP (a risky
- proposition, admittedly) revealed that the clipboard routines did not report
- an error. In fact, the clipboard was updated inside LSP, but once I quit back
- to the Finder, the clipboard reverted to its old state. Is this my error or
- some devious bug?

- VersaTerm-Pro stores all its screen data in RAM, and hence can be a real

- We have a Hayes-compatible modem which runs ok using MacTerminal 1.9 but
- hangs when we use MacTerminal 2.1 or 2.2. Does anyone know about this
- problem and/or have any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance. Please reply
- via email as I don't usually read this newsgroup.

- Are there any plans to allow X windows to be run on the Mac OS side of
- the Mac II now that the Ethertalk board is shipping? It would be
- extremely nice to be able to use the mac as an Xterminal display server.
- This would allow Apple to come out with a II with fewer slots and lower
- cost that could be an X workstation, without the overhead of Unix. I
- have heard about the 2 companies porting news to the Mac, but it was
- unclear if they were targeting A/UX as the run time environment and if
- it was limited to the Mac II platform.
-
- Of course Sun, NeXt, Hp and Dec probably would not like this idea too
- much.

-
- I think Tech Note 180 has the answer. It says: "Multifinder 1.0 keeps
- separate scrap variables for each partition. Multifinder only checks to
- see whether or not to increment the other partition' scrapCounts in
- response to a user-initiated Cut or Copy. To do this it watches the
- SystemEdit call to determine whether an official Cut or Copy has been
- issued."
-
- This means that your picture is going into the clipboard, but
- Multifinder is not telling the other applications about it.
-
- I think the solution would be to call SystemEdit with a parameter of 3
- (=Copy); as long as your application window is frontmost, SystemEdit
- will return FALSE (it won't tell a DA to do the Copy), but Multifinder
- will think that a Copy has been done.
-
- I don't have any documentation that indicates whether this is the
- "right" thing to do. I thought that I had read something about this,
- but now I can't find the referenc.
